Realized by joint initiative of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency and Chamber of Maritime Commerce and cooperation with Greece and Bulgaria, the Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta will be realized in Turkish waters for the first time.
The fleet of 23 vessels from 16 countries will race in three phases: from Volos to Varna, from Varna to Istanbul, from Istanbul to Lavrion. Historic ships will be open to visitors in the Bosphorus on May 18; and in Karaköy port on May 27 to 30. Ther passing throgh the Bosphorus can be watched between 11:00 and 12.00 o’clock.
A tradition since 1956, the Tall Noble Sailing Race will be done in Aegean, Marmara and Black Sea waters fort he first time in its history with the support of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture.
Tall Noble Sailing Race aims at bringing young people together without any discrimination on language, religion and race; introducing them with the sea, arising fondness of the sea and growing awareness on environmental issues and sea pollution. Starting on 12 May from the port of Volos in Greece, the sails will pass through Dardanelles and Bosphorus and set out to the Black Sea for arriving in Varna on 21 May.
After staying three days there the ships will visit Istanbul on 27 May for three days on their route back before sailing again on 30 May. Their stay of 4 days in Istanbul will be celebrated just as a festival. During that term, Bosphorus cruises, kayaking, rowing, sea-bicycle races etc will be held to raise public interest in sea and water sports.
It is also targeted that this organization would attract international attention and therefore to contribute to the promotion of Istanbul as well as tourism and promotion of Turkey as a whole.
A Turkish ship in the race The first sail training ship of our Republican history STS/BODRUM will join in the Tall Noble Sailing Race on behalf of Turkey.
